This Year's Grammy Goes To: Disappointment

The Grammys are always something that I look forward to every year. It’s an award show where everyone in music comes together for one night. The Grammys are always the best award show of the year they are better than the Brits or the Oscars. But this year they were absolutely horrible.

For starters, Lorde didn’t get the Grammy for Album of the Year for her album Melodrama. If you have not listened to that album, please do yourself a huge favor and listen to it. The Grammy for Album of the Year went to Bruno Mars for 24K Magic. Another very big disappointment for me was that Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” took the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance. He was up against songs that were much better lyrically, including “Praying” by Kesha and “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga. I absolutely love Ed Sheeran but he absolutely did not deserve to get this Grammy over the others that were nominated for that category. Ed Sheeran took home another Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for his album, Divide, which was probably the best award the Grammys gave out that made sense. I have personally listened to all the albums that were nominated in that category and Ed’s album was definitely the clear winner.

The next thing I think the Grammys messed up is the song that won Best Country Song, that went to Chris Stapleton for his song “Broken Halos”. I listened to the song and it is beautiful, but it kind of just repeats itself. When looking at the lyrics of the song in depth I do not think the Grammy should have gone to Chris Stapleton. I think it should have gone to “Better Man” by Taylor Swift, performed by Little Big Town. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, “Sam, you are only saying that because you love Taylor Swift.” No. Basing it off of lyrics and not the songwriter, “Better Man” should have got it.

Kendrick Lamar opened up the night with a series of his songs. I am personally not a fan of Kendrick; I just don’t listen to his music. But how he opened the show was very different and unexpected. As he was singing, he was acting like he was shooting down his backup dancers and at first I was like, Okay maybe this is leading up to something, maybe it was going to be some kind of story. But, nope, it wasn’t. It kept getting more and more weird.

The Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media went to “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin-Manuel Miranda, performed by Auli’i Cravalho from the movie Moana. I have seen Moana, more than once and that song is truly amazing. I have listened to almost all the songs in the category since they came out and “How Far I’ll Go” definity deserved this one. Side note: Taylor Swift and Zayn were nominated for a song in this category with their song, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” and I definitely think “How Far I’ll Go” deserved it. If you have not watched Moana or listened to the soundtrack, I would highly recommend giving it a try.

In the soundtrack categories, La La Land took the Grammys for almost all of them. I personally think that La La Land had one of the best soundtracks ever. The movie is amazing and the music and song they have in it are just amazing. I definitely think that they got the Grammys they deserve.

So the Grammys were a disappointment in a lot of way but they also did a pretty good job. They gave out many awards to people and songs that we all knew deserved them, but as the night went on they awards to people when we knew they could have gone to better. The Grammys were not necessarily horrible they could have just been a lot better. They had a good host, James Corden, and everyone loves him. Hopefully next year will be better.
