A new hit series has landed on NBC: Rise. The series starts with introducing all the main characters and a little of their back stories. We meet Lou Mazzuchelli, played by Josh Radnor, who gets offered to take over the schools theater department. As he takes the theater department into his own hands he takes the star of the football team, who was failing his class, and had him take part in the musical. All the students are different outside of theater. But while doing theater they are all the same. As we learn more about the students we learn about their families as well. Everyone's family is a big part of the show, all of them have separate problems, they are all very different.
As Lou Mazzuchelli takes over the theater department he decides to also change what musical they do. They were originally going to put on the production of Grease, but Lou decided they need to try something different. They start rehearsing to put on Spring Awakening. As the episode goes on you see what peoples thoughts are on this play. The principle decides to put it down after he reads the actual script. He then takes the theater department away from Lou and gives it back to Ms. Wolfe, who had it before him. The principle also demanded they change the musical to a production that they have already done, Pirates of Penzance as they already had all the costumes and props for it so it would not cost them any money. The students, after learning they don’t have Mr. Mazzuchelli anymore and that the show was going to be changed, they decide to do something about it. They show how they feel about the whole situation by going out to the school's parking lot that night and burn the costumes from Pirates of Penzance while singing a song from Spring Awakening. The football coach and principal come out and see how much the students actually care, the star football player stays doing the musical, because he genuinely wants to now, and Lou gets the theater department back and Spring Awakening.
I definitely think this show is going to be a hit. I think that it is a very personal show that a lot of people can relate to in many ways. It includes some very realistic issues and a very good storyline so far. I can’t wait to watch more. If you want to watch the series you can go on NBC.com or watch it on NBC every Tuesday at 9pm EST.
