Student Voice: Prom Expectations
It is springtime which is an exciting time of year! With prom coming up, we have an exciting event to look forward to. The prom theme for this year is Gatsby’s Garden. Jay Gatsby is one of the main characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s Garden is described as enormous with colorful lights and a large spread of hors-d’oeuvres. In this scene, we are also introduced to Gatsby’s lifestyle which is quite extravagant. He often holds parties where many people of the upper class go to have a good time. Because of the theme, I expect prom to be very classy.
Due to the future event, I thought it would be a good idea to ask students around the school to hear about what they expect out of the upcoming prom. I asked quite a lot of students about how they feel and what they expect out of the prom and got quite a mixture of opinions on the prom. I noticed that a lot of students had similar expectations and opinions. A common response I received was that the tickets were overpriced and that the students were given no time to purchase the tickets. Another common response was that the prom committee is overly aggressive and this has caused people to not want to buy tickets. Also quite a few people are disappointed that it is rumored that sweet mashed potatoes are being served over regular mashed potatoes. One student went to say that the prom committee is a bunch of communists for deciding to serve sweet mashed potatoes (I have no idea if the prom committee has actually made this decision or if they had the choice to make this decision), but if sweet mashed potatoes are being served and you happen to not like them, then don’t eat them. From the prom committee, I have heard that there will be a beef, chicken, and a vegetarian option being served.
Lastly, one person I asked about their opinion on the prom responded with oh yeah, mhmm mhmm. I decided not to ask that person any further questions.
With all negative things aside, quite a few people had a lot of positive things to say about the upcoming prom. A lot of people are quite excited about the location which is Dowd’s Country Inn. Dowd’s Country Inn is located in Lyme, New Hampshire. I believe the event is being held in the Banquet Hall. The Banquet Hall is a great space that holds up to 200 seats in the hall, so there is a lot of space. There is also a courtyard and patio immediately outside of the hall which makes the space even better. The courtyard features an ample amount of space for socializing and dancing. I am quite excited about this location because it is something different from the usual Lake Morey venue. A lot of people are excited for good food and a great dance floor. Even though people have negative things to say about the prom, a lot of people will still go and still have a good time.
With the school year coming to an end, this is one of the last times (especially for seniors) for the everyone to get together and hopefully have some fun with each other before the school year comes to an end. I think that this year’s prom will be a success. I know that the prom committee has been working very hard and I highly doubt that they will let us down. They’ve done a great job with the location and I have a feeling that the food will be great. Like Gatsby’s parties, I think it will be a good time and I hope to see you all at prom on May 5th.
